MODULAR REFINERIES

A modular refinery is a prefabricated crude oil processing plant designed for the distillation of crude oil into naphtha, kerosene, diesel, residual fuel oil and off gas using crude distillation unit (CDU). These initial petroleum products could be further processed using secondary process equipment (hydrotreating units and reforming units) to produce high octane gasoline, aviation fuel and low sulfur diesel. Modular refineries are delivered in prefabricated modules, shipped and installed at site to reduce cost and construction time frame.

Modularization enables the major refinery equipment units to be prefabricated on skid-mounted steel structures prior to shipment to refinery’s location for the production of Gasoline, Diesel, Jet Fuel, Kerosene, MDO, Fuel Oil, and LPG as specified by our clients based on their crudes. Major refinery equipment units includes:

• Atmospheric Distillation Units – refines crude into naphtha, kerosene, diesel and residuum
• Vacuum Distillation Units – separates the Atmospheric Tower Bottoms from the Atmospheric Distillation Units into more products
• Hydro Desulfurization Units – removes sulfur compounds from distillate products
• Diesel Hydrotreater Units – removes impurities like sulfur and nitrogen from diesel feed in the presence of catalyst and hydrogen to produce Low Sulfur Diesel or ULSD
• Kerosene Hydrotreater Units – a catalytic process that removes sulfur from kerosene to produce Jet Fuel for aviation use. The refined product can be used for residential fuel purposes, industrial furnace or other fuel combustion uses
• Catalytic Reformer Units – produces high-octane gasoline; Isomerization unit can be added to increase or reach the target octane level for the gasoline product
• Hydrocracker Units – increases diesel production from heavier fuels
• Other process units as may be needed for each project at the completion of the process equipment design stage

At the request of our clients, Amerisource will provide feasibility studies, market appraisals and initial engineering study (Pre-Project Planning) to determine project suitability and required major equipment that will meet the needs of our client’s modular refineries. The majority of the planning and designs are accomplished during the early stages of the project development.
